From Aqua to Pop Trash

October 29, 2009

From listening to Aqua‘s “Back to the 80s” in the last post, I was reminded of another really cool song about the 80s, “80s Girl” from Pop Trash.

Pop Trash - "80s Girl" single

“80s Girl” is from Pop Trash’s self titled debut which came out in 2005.  Heavy on the keyboards and synthesizers, with lush guitar and layered vocals, Pop Trash totally have the 80s synthpop thing down. Pop Trash’s name is taken from the album titled Pop Trash by 80s band Duran Duran. They had a small internet buzz for awhile, then kinda faded away… but, I hear that they may be working on new material!  Between 2005 and the present, the members of Pop Trash have been working on other bands, including Nikki Blonde (who also sounds very 80s) and Evil Love Drones.  Here is their song “80s Girl”  enjoy!

Universal Poplab

October 1, 2009

Ok, so I was lookin through some music blogs again tryin’ to find new bands to post and I came across a review of Elegant Machinery’s “A Soft Exchange” on Synthpop Reviews.  Last week I posted a video from Elegant Machinery and if you haven’t checked them out, scroll down and take a listen. In the review, the bands Universal Poplab (sweden) and Midnight Resistance (germany) are mentioned.  Both are great examples of modern synthpop that owes a lot to the synthpop of the 80s. I haven’t yet found a video for Midnight Resistance, but here is Universal Poplab’s  “New Baby Boom”, enjoy!

Frankmusik

September 29, 2009

I was checkin out other blogs looking for new bands and came across this gem, Frankmusik.  I found Frankmusik on a post on The New Wave Diva, who credits a Mr. Billy Suede for turning her on to this great little British pop artist.  Check out this video for the song “3 Little Words” off of his debut album “Complete Me.”  Very 80s and very fun!!  The video for “3 Little Words” reminds me of a scene from the 80s movie “Big” with Tom Hanks where he is dancing on the giant keyboard.  Frankmusik has also remixed material from other artists such as Lady GaGa and the Pet Shop Boys.

Here’s a couple more pure pop fun vids from Frankmusik, enjoy!

elegant MACHINERY

September 25, 2009

“Move” is the second single from the new album “A Soft Exchange” from scandinavian synthpop group  elegant MACHINERY.  These guys have a pretty retro 80s sound.  The vocals reminded me of OMD (Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark) and the music reminds me of the Pet Shop Boys, in addition to other 80s bands.

Action Action

September 22, 2009

Ok, I’m going to start going thru the List over there to the right>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Some of the bands on the list I’ve been exposed to and some are bands that I’ve heard about but haven’t thoroughly checked out yet.  First on the list is the New York band Action Action. I heard Action Action a few years ago when the album “Don’t Cut Your Fabric to This Year’s Fashion” came out. Here is the first song that I heard off of the album, titled “Drug Like”. Verrry 80s sounding tune with big fat sawtooth keyboards and vocals that remind me of Dave Gahan of Depeche Mode. Enjoy!

Melody Club… synthpop/rock from Sweden takes you back to the future!

September 13, 2009

Swedish synthpop band Melody Club takes a little more than a page from history, more like a whole chapter!  Melody Club is sooo retro 80s that it’s not even funny, it’s actually cool!  Each of their albums are full of very slick, well-crafted pop songs that get you movin’ to the beat and humming along.  Everything about this band makes me feel like I’ve just taken a ride in a DeLorean equipped with a flux capaciter, set the time to 1984, we’re going back, to the future!

Check out Melody Club’s youtube channel for more videos, there are videos that are even more 80s than this, The Only Ones is from their new album Goodby to Romance.
